The sail is normally kept folded down and to the side when swimming, but it may be raised when the sailfish feels threatened or excited, making the fish appear much larger than it actually is.

Costa Rica's main fishing season is December thru May although May thru August is considered the prime season for Sailfish, November thru March is considered prime for Marlin but depending on the weather we fish year round for Snapper.Wahoo, Roosterfish, Tuna, Dorado, Sail and Marlin. Since December thru May is the dry season the waters are usually calm, therefore fishing is prime.
